Social media: de la desconfianza a la oportunidad

Ludi García – Technology & Digital Practice Director. Recientemente, leía una entrevista a Jennifer Preston, responsable de redes sociales en The New York Time, y vi clarísimo cómo hay gente y medios que están sabiendo adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos sin complejos y otros que no.

Ya había hecho esta reflexión poco tiempo antes, hablando con la redactora jefe de una importante revista española científica y divulgativa. Me encantaba oírla contar cómo habían sabido integrar la participación ciudadana en la generación de contenidos de su medio y como los nuevos medios sociales, no sólo no habían supuesto una amenaza, sino más bien un dinamizador y una forma de saber lo que la gente quiere, así como de estar más cerca de los lectores. Como periodista creo que es parte de nuestra responsabilidad estar en continuo aprendizaje.

Esto es algo que ha hecho Jennifer Preston en los 25 años en los que ha ejercido el periodismo, tanto en el mundo de la política, como responsable de cuatro suplementos dominicales y la sección de local. Cuando tomó las riendas de su nuevo trabajo, la cuenta de Twitter de The New York Times llevaba dos años activa. Hoy, el diario tiene 85 cuentas dedicadas a diferentes temas y 145 periodistas de la casa “tuiteando”.

En su opinión, “una vez que se comprende el valor de estas herramientas, no hay marcha atrás, porque sirven para encontrar fuentes, seguir y explorar tendencias, tomar ideas para nuevas historias e investigar”. Contar con 600.000 seguidores en Facebook aporta, sin duda, un valor añadido en la redacción. “Cuando vamos a tratar un tema, les pedimos ayuda. El periodista que va a escribir la historia cuenta con más de 300 correos electrónicos con nombre y apellidos en menos de una hora”, explica Jennifer Preston. “Y en cuanto ven algo tan valioso, ¿cómo no van a creer en ello?”.

Preston está convencida de que uno de los grandes retos de los periódicos es dar la última hora, contar qué pasa en tiempo real, y para eso los lectores son imprescindibles. La implicación del usuario en las noticias no tiene marcha atrás.

La cercanía y conocimiento del lector hasta la llegada de estos servicios tenía más que ver con el trabajo de auditorías y la intuición del reportero que con datos concretos. Gracias a Facebook y Twitter, los lectores son reconocibles, emiten mensajes, cuentan de todo, desde tonterías a hechos relevantes. Para la editora de estos contenidos, la criba es importante pero también lo es “reconocer qué nos piden, darles crédito, dejarles ser parte de un medio que también es suyo”.

Dentro de esta política de apertura del medio, The New York Times va un paso más allá. Mientras muchos medios se empeñan en enlazarse a sí mismos, ellos enlazan a “todo lo que merece la pena y es relevante para nuestro lector. Si algo es bueno, ¿por qué no darlo? Los lectores volverán no sólo por lo que contamos, sino por lo que descubrimos y recomendamos”.

En definitiva, no creo que estemos ante una crisis desde el punto de vista negativo, sí ante un cambio y una gran oportunidad, que nos está permitiendo por primera vez acercarnos, interactuar y escuchar de primera mano lo que la gente quiere, piensa o le interesa.
